The dictionary definition of ergonomics states, “Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance”.
Of late, ergonomics associated with office chairs has become a very important design consideration. Long working hours in sitting position, some obesity and health problems have necessitated construction of Ergonomic Office Chairs. Such chairs have adjustable seats, back, arm-rests, height and back support. This has become necessary to prevent back pain and stress related injuries associated with long period of sitting, most of the time in front leaning posture.
Though changing position while sitting long hours on a chair, taking frequent short walk inside the office premises and shifting gaze towards landscape visuals offered by the side windows may help relieve fatigue and physical stress, it is the ergonomic features of the chair that could offer the best comfort. Nobody likes to have problems like spinal misalignment, numbness, neck pain, joint pain, and herniated discs.
